As with Vitamin C, the human body does not manufacture Bioflavonoids,
so there must be a regular supply through the diet and supplements. Bioflavonoids are necessary for the absorption of Vitamin C and they should be taken together.
Bioflavanoids increase the effectiveness of Vitamin C by preventing it from being destroyed by oxidation in the body. These bioflavonoids greatly improve the body's ability to absorb and hold onto the Vitamin C. Without bioflavonoids Vitamin C is not as effective.
Bioflavonoid Deficiencies:
Joint pains
Bacterial infection
Poor circulation
Bleeding gums
Lack of energy
Poor digestion
Fatigue may be a sign of low levels of Vitamin C in the blood. In cases of Vitamin C deficiency, arteries weaken and cause bleeding into tissue spaces; the oxidation of fats occurs as well as increases in cholesterol. In order to protect itself, the body produces more healing proteins, which thicken the arteries. This protects the body from Vitamin C deficiency, but in the long run these thickened arteries may become clogged leading to cardiovascular problems.
Cold & Flu viruses
The white blood cells which ingest viruses and bacteria use powerful disinfectants (oxidising agents) to destroy the infective agents. This oxidising activity can be overdone and can also damage neighbouring cells – causing inflammation. This inflammation results in severe common cold symptoms. Antioxidant compounds (Vitamin C, Garlic, Betacarotene and so on) can have a beneficial effect by limiting the damage caused by excess oxidising agents. Large doses of Vitamin C (1-2 grams a day) are required in order to provide any useful antioxidant activity.
